10 Jun Men’s Health Week 2020 – Take Action on Covid-19
Men’s health week 2020 is here, from June 15th-21st! The theme this year is to take action on Covid-19.
We want to highlight the importance of men’s health week by sharing a blog tailored just for men!
So, friends, family, husbands, brothers, get tagging and let’s spread the message about how we can get healthier together.
We get it, Gents – it can be hard to tackle all aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Especially when we may be working, raising kids, juggling busy social lives (pre-lockdown) and trying to relax and enjoy the weekends too. As part of Men’s Health Week, we’re raising awareness of how we can help Men for FREE. Just like the theme says, it’s time to take action on Covid-19.
It is crucial at this current time to strongly consider giving up smoking. The virus is known to aggressively attack the cardiovascular system, naturally this means smokers are going to suffer the repercussions of covid-19 more than anyone else. We offer a FREE remote stop smoking service to anyone who lives in East Sussex, as part of this we provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy or Medication and 1-2-1 behavioural change support alongside each quit attempt. Scarily, secondhand smoke can be just as damaging – by stopping with us you can not only improve your own health but also the health of your family, friends and pets too.
If we carry on as we are, there will be 5 million people in the UK with Diabetes by 2025.
90% of people with Diabetes, have the version known as type 2. Type 2 can be caused by a lack of exercise and/or an overconsumption of certain foods. But by looking at our diet and exercise levels, Type 2 Diabetes can be put into remission. We have free adult weight management courses that are currently running weekly over video or phone sessions. Information provided will include portion control, sugar intake and healthy recipes/ snacks.
Type 2 Diabetes can be controlled from exercise, the more we move the better chance we have of fending off Type 2 Diabetes. Currently, we’re in a different situation to normal as our Weight Management courses when delivered in person also hold an optional physical activity component. Due to current government guideline measures, we are teaching our courses virtually – we’re also incredibly excited to be able to offer a new virtual gym platform that can help you achieve your exercise goals in the comfort of your own home!
Sign up to access our service and you’ll gain free access to our virtual gym! Classes are led by experienced instructors at live intervals throughout the day, although they can’t see you so don’t worry about the state of the house! Likewise, there’s plenty of sessions saved to the Vault that can be accessed 24/7. Start your fitness journey today with our help.

We haven’t had the chance to deliver NHS Health Checks for the last few months, understandably. But a health check can be viewed as an MOT for anyone aged 40-74. As it’s men’s health week, we’re going to specifically talk about how a NHS Health Check can help Gents. Some common health conditions Men may encounter include stroke, heart problems, obesity, and diabetes.
A free NHS Health Check can take up to 40 minutes and is a cardiovascular screening tool, using a variety of questions regarding diet, exercise, family history and habits alongside a small pin prick blood test for cholesterol and potentially diabetes. We can give you a QRISK score, this is an estimate at the risk of having Cardiovascular Disease in the next 10 years. From here, we can also advise how best to tweak lifestyles for healthier outcomes.
To be eligible for a NHS Health Check, you must be aged between 40-74, not be on medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or a heart condition and have not had a check in the last 5 years. With a referral today we can add you to our list and contact you as soon as we are able to deliver free NHS health checks again – in line with government guidelines.
This can be a tough subject to talk about for men. Would you like help reducing your alcohol intake? Our service supports people to reduce our consumption of alcohol. This can include alternatives on what to drink or talking through strategies that can be taken away and practised to ensure we stick to the government guidelines which are not exceeding 14 units of Alcohol a week. Ideally, with 2 alcohol free days back to back for our organ health. We aren’t a dependency service, we can point you in the direction of those that can help. However, if it’s reducing your alcohol consumption you’re interested in – be sure to refer yourself today.
